Closing Event and Help Fill Hours This Last Week!

Can you believe it?  Another 40 Days for Life campaign is almost behind us....only a few more days until our 6th prayer vigil in Madison is completed.  And thanks to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, thanks to your commitment, and thanks to all the volunteers who make this happen each year, we will complete another successful one.  We have achieved much as part of the 40 Days for Life international coalitiion:
  • As of this writing, 469 babies have been saved, that we KNOW of.
  • As of this writing, 3 abortion workers have quit their jobs and a few more are thinking about doing the same.
BUT we still have much to accomplish.  With a critical election coming next Tuesday, we can't let up; too much is at stake!  As we looked forward to celebrating the achievements of this campaign, we decided more prayer for the preborn, mothers, and fathers is needed as part of our closing event, not just celebration.  We hope you can join us this Sunday, prior to election day, to ask God for His mercy, to hear our cries for conversion so that more will realize the damage contraception and abortion have done to our country and our world.

Closing Event - Sunday, November 4, 2012
  • Arrive at 4:30pm - Planned Parenthood, 3706 Orin Rd.
  • 4:45pm - Be in place on the public sidewalk on the northeast corner behind Planned Parenthood building for messages.
  • 5:00pm - Fr. John Sasse will lead us in the Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary.  A Rosary procession will stop at 15 Rosary images, which will include a timeline of the Planned Parenthood history.  (If you are unable to join us outside, you can pray the Rosary inside St. Patrick's Church in Cottage Grove from 5:30pm to 6:30pm.  Directions are below.)
  • About 6:30pm -  The Angelus and a Blessing will conclude the Closing of 40 Days.
  • All are invited to a reception at Fr. Sasse's parish: St. Patrick Parish, 434 N. Main St., Cottage Grove, WI 53527.  Vigil for Life will provide cake and beverages.  Directions:  From Planned Parenthood, go south on Hwy. 51 (Stoughton Rd.) to Cottage Grove Rd. exit.  Go east under the Stoughton Rd. overpass to Cottage Grove.  Turn right on Main St.; St. Patrick's is on the left.
  •  Parking:  FOR THIS EVENT ONLY we have been given permission by the Women's Care Center to use their parking lot or you can park on the street.

We praise you, Father, that you sent your Son to reveal to the world that all people are His brothers and sisters, that all people are your children. Through Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.

THIS is Why We're Out There! Help Needed This Weekend

Dear Friends,

I want to share with you a prayer warrior's exciting story about her experience on the sidewalk of Planned Parenthood last Sunday.  As she and her group began their prayer shift, a car with a young woman pulled up and asked if they were there to stop abortion.  Upon their affirmative reply, she motioned to the back seat where they saw her 6 month old son in his car seat, a picture of health!  "I did not abort," she declared, "because you people were out here!"  To quote the prayer warrior: "What joy for all of us to hear her testimony!  Of all the times I've been on a sidewalk praying, this is a first for me!"

THIS is why we're out there in the dark, in the night, in the cold, in the rain, without sleep....to sacrifice, to be uncomfortable for a little while, to pray for the baby with no voice, no choice and the mother who will regret.

As you let this story soak in, please look at the vigil calendar and come out to the sidewalk this weekend and next week - our final week of 40 Days for Life.  We're approaching the home stretch and need you as much now as we did at the beginning.  You may never know if you personally changed someone's mind by being out there but you may know for sure that, as part of this international campaign, you definitely played an important role in saving the more than 340 lives so far!

Please sign-up online at http://vigilforlife.org/calendar/monthview or contact info@vigilforlife.org

Here are our needs:

Appointment for Abortion Canceled! Stations of the Cross Tonight

Thank you to all who responded and even promoted the special day of prayer and fasting last week.  Through God's mercy, a woman who had scheduled an abortion last Thursday CANCELED her appointment and, so far, is choosing "pregnancy as a viable option".  These words, provided by someone close to the situation, give us great joy but also indicate the volatility of it.  It's possible she could reschedule so please continue to offer prayer, sacrifice, Rosaries, Masses, etc.; we are not out of the woods yet and things could suddenly change....she could reschedule.  Thank you, Lord, for hearing us and please keep her on the track of choosing life!

Let us pray.....that we can add this baby to the 341 saved so far in this fall's International 40 Days for Life campaign!

Intention:  We pray for humility in our work for God’s Kingdom.

Reflection:  There is no limit to what we can accomplish when we don’t care who gets the credit.

Jesus Christ’s life on earth exemplifies a total submission to the will of the Father. His humility, compassion, gentleness and thoughtfulness are reflected over and over again in the New Testament. He was God incarnate, yet He chose to be born to a humble, working class home.

How absurd it must have seemed to the rich and powerful that the Son of God, the Messiah, the one foretold by the prophets, the ‘King of the Jews’ was born and raised as a simple peasant.  During His thirty-three years on earth, He sought no riches, claimed no secular power and gathered no possessions.  His short time on earth changed more lives, softened more hearts, and gave hope to more people, than all the rich and powerful human ‘kings’ combined.

And, at the end of His life on earth, by dying on the cross, He opened the door to eternal life for those who heed his words and follow in his footsteps. Prayer:  O Lord, help us follow in the footsteps of Jesus.  Let us humbly and diligently work to restore legal protection for the unborn, the disabled, the medically dependent and all innocent children of God whose lives are threatened.  Let us remember the old adage that “He can never lead who has not first learned to obey.”  And, Lord, grant us a peaceful heart as we labor in your name. Amen.

See You Tonight!  Join Fr. Rick Heilman, the Knights of Divine Mercy, and St. Mary's Pine Bluff parishioners in a Prayer Vigil on the sidewalks of Planned Parenthood, 3706 Orin Rd.  We will assemble at 6:00pm and Father Rick will lead us in the Stations of the Cross at 6:30pmJoin us in prayer for life and conversion as we walk and reflect on the Lord's Passion and Death.
(Remember to park on the street only - not in the Women's Care Center parking lot!)

Urgent!--Emergency Day of Fasting

From time to time we are alerted about abortion-minded women.  We have recently become aware of an extremely urgent situation.  More details cannot be shared, but it is of grave severity.

Please dedicate today to prayer and fasting....Let us pray:

Intention:
That those tempted to abort may understand that their child is already present, and already a real person.

Scripture:
And it happened, when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary that the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. Then she spoke out with a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! But why is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For indeed, as soon as the voice of your greeting sounded in my ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.
—Luke 1:41-44

Reflection:
Jesus not only loves unborn children — He was one himself!  Think about this for a moment.  We often hear people speak of a pregnant mother by saying, “She’s expect ing a child.”  Now if one is expecting a package, the package is not yet there.  As reflected in our verse for today, however, this is not the case with the mother.  Her gift is already there. The pregnant woman, a mother already, does not have a child “on the way,” but has a child, already present and in full possession of his or her human rights, starting with the right to life.

Prayer:
Jesus, open my eyes to your presence in the life of every child. Open my heart to joy in the birth of every child, a birth that reflects the joy of your own birth in Bethlehem.
As you shared life in the womb of Mary, so now send your protection upon every child still in the womb, and grant to their mothers the strength and joy that comes from welcoming the gift of life. We pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Hours This Week and Special Announcements!

We're now half-way through the 40 Days for Life vigil and, thanks to the guidance of the Holy Spirit and your sacrifice, we've been able to keep hours filled.  BUT we still have a long way to go!  Don't sit back and let things slide NOW; we need you!  Looking at the week ahead, there are many openings from which to choose prayer time that fits best in your schedule - please go to vigilforlife.org/calendar/monthview and lock in your hours!  You can also contact info@vigilforlife.org to sign up.

Open Hours This Week:
Tuesday, 10/16/12:  90% filled - 5 hours to choose from
Wednesday, 10/17/12:  83% filled - 8 hours open
Thursday, 10/18/12:  Only 69% filled!  15 hours to fill!  Yikes!
Friday, Saturday, and Sunday:  Only 44 to 48% filled!  Please help!

You have responded so well to our calls for help; please save us some phone calls and take action!  May the Daily Devotional for Day 20 from the 40 Days for Life leadership inspire and awaken us to the need for persistent prayer as we stand for life on the sidewalk.

Intention:
May God’s justice sober our society; may mercy triumph over judgment.

Scripture:
Surely for your lifeblood I will demand a reckoning; from the hand of every beast I will require it, and from the hand of man. From the hand of every man's brother I will require the life of man. Whoever sheds man's blood, by man his blood shall be shed; for in the image of God He made man.
—Genesis 9:5-6

Reflection:

The value of every human being can hardly be seen more clearly than with this verse. God, the King of the universe, has created all human beings in his image, and declares forthrightly that shedding the blood of any individual will require the blood of the one who shed it.
God's concern for human beings is not limited to any particular group. Indeed, his concern is universal, and includes male and female, young and old, born and unborn, disabled and able-bodied, the citizens of every nation on earth.

Abortion, the deliberate killing of the unborn, is the shedding of innocent blood. Surely the blood of millions upon millions of innocent children cries out to God. It is true that we live in an age of grace, and yet this passage (among many other texts which express similar sentiments) should give every thinking Christian pause.

Christians of all people, entrusted with the Word of God as we are, must take a stand. We must speak out. We must do all that we can to protect the innocent, to pursue justice, and to encourage the repentance of all those who bear responsibility for this great evil.

Only in this manner can we hope to forestall the judgment that must otherwise surely come.
This passage should also be seen as an encouragement to educate and disciple our children and grandchildren about what it means to be human, and the responsibility that will become theirs in this ongoing struggle.

Prayer:
O Father, forgive us for our lack of courage and our want of compassion for the unborn and for those lost and hurt by abortion. Fill us anew with your Spirit.  Renew our minds, strengthen us in righteousness, help us be people of salt and light within our nation.  May every human being, from conception to natural death, be treated with the respect due those made in your image. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

A Lot of Help Needed, Especially This Weekend

We are now into our third week and nearing the midpoint of 40 Days for Life.  We're all busy and it's getting colder outside but we MUST continue our resolve and commitment to those who cannot speak for themselves: the unborn.  Even though we may want to relax in the comfort of our warm homes, it's time to dig deep, commit to sacrifice, renew our energy, and sign up for hours.

The sacrifice of praying outside Planned Parenthood is one to be shared by all of our Vigil for Life prayer warriors, not by just  a few.  If you haven't signed up for hours yet, please help!  If not you; then who?  Together we can make this a successful campaign!

With the Year of Faith starting and Respect Life Month upon us, we need to contemplate what it means to be "Pro-Life".  Are we just saying it or are we showing it as well?  Father Frank Pavone's intention, reflection, and prayer below emphasizes prayer and action.  We need to ask ourselves if we are doing our part to end this culture of death or are we "sitting idly by" and letting someone else do it.  If you get an email or a phone call from a vigil captain, please find an hour or more to give back to God in gratitude for "the breath of life."

Intention:
May all understand more deeply that the pro-life message is rooted in two basic truths of life:
1) There is a God
2) He isn’t me

Reflection:
A Southern California abortionist, James McMahon, once explained how he justified killing children after 20 weeks gestation by the process known as partial-birth abortion.  He did not deny that this was a child, but rather asked, “Who owns the child? It’s got to be the mother.”
The struggle over abortion is really a struggle over the dominion of God.
The Christian individual, and the Christian Church, cannot sit idly by when others declare that God is not God.

Prayer:
Lord, we are yours. Thank you for breathing into us the breath of life.
Thank you for claiming us as your own.
May our words and actions in defense of human life proclaim to all the world that you alone are Lord of life and death, Lord of our freedom and of our choices.
We pray in Jesus’ name, amen.

Your Help is Needed This Week! Women lined up waiting for PP to Open!

If you have checked the vigil calendar recently, you'll see we are in need of your sacrifice once again.  Although today is filled and only one hour is open on Wednesday, the rest of the week is looking a little sparse. October is Respect Life Month; what better way to profess respect for life than by prayer, fasting, and witness out on the sidewalks of Planned Parenthood?

This past week at Planned Parenthood, a young man, who was walking by and unfamiliar with 40 Days for Life, inquired about our prayer vigil. After some questions and discussion, he decided to pray on his own on the sidewalk.  A line had formed waiting for the doors to open at 9:00am.  This young guy dropped to his knees, causing the waiting line of women to take notice.  He was bowed in prayer and didn't see the attention he was getting but it was clear that his expression of prayer affected them.  He made a difference by being there!

Urgent - Prayers Needed!
Please pray for a woman in the Madison area who is considering abortion....that she may see that God has a plan for this little one and that this child may live to fulfill that plan.  Dear Lord, give her a mother's love that she may give birth!

Fantastic News from The Karlen Family!
It is with great joy that I pass on the announcement of the birth of John Paul Charles Karlen!  John Paul arrived on Oct. 3 (all 8 lbs. of him!) and baby and mother are doing well.  Steve and Laura have asked me to express their gratitude to you, the Vigil for Life community, for all of your prayers.

Reminder to Sign the Statement of Peace:

Based on advice from the National 40 days for Life Campaign, all participants are required to sign a hard copy of the new Statement of Peace, even if you have signed one previously. This is because the content has changed slightly and because, starting this Fall, we will be collecting and filing these signed hard copies. (The new Statement of Peace will remain “on file” for you for all future Vigil for Life activities in a permanent Madison Vigil for Life file, until you decide to revoke it.) There will be blank sign-able copies of the Statement of Peace in the Vigil Bag. For those with computer access, a PDF copy can be downloaded from vigilforlife.org. This can be printed, signed, and either placed in the vigil bag folder or sent to the address listed on the bottom. (Please Note: You cannot sign this form electronically or submit a scanned signed copy)

Lord, I pray today for every unborn child.  The beauty of the bodies and souls of these children flows from your hands and your eternal plan.  Awaken in every human conscience a profound reverence for human life, and grant us grace to defend our smallest and most defenseless brothers and sisters, those still being formed in the secret places of their mothers’ womb. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

This Weekend is Looking Thin - Please Help!

Last time we implored your help, you came through.  Once again, we are urgently in need of your sacrifices this weekend to keep our vigil going!  Today and Thursday, hours are filled - Praise God!  But we need your IMMEDIATE ACTION to fill many vigil hours Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.  Please sign up RIGHT AWAY by visiting vigilforlife.org/calendar/monthview.

Friday (10/05/12):  Only 71% filled!  14 hours are open!

Saturday (10/06/12):  Only 50% filled!  24 hours are open!
Sunday (10/07/12):  Only 56% filled!  21 hours are open!

Many of these hours are late night or overnight ones.  We need you men out there during these times!  Please step forward and sacrifice, especially if you haven't yet participated; don't leave it up to a few heroic ones to carry the load.
Today's Scripture reading relates the story of the Good Samaritan, a message to take with us as we are out on the sidewalk.

Prayer Intention for Today:  May the spirit and example of the Good Samaritan fill the hearts and minds of all our citizens.

Let us pray,

Father, we are moved by the lesson of the Good Samaritan, who allowed compassion to influence him more than fear. Give us the same heart.  Grant that we may never count the cost of standing up and speaking out for the unborn. We pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer Intention for today:  That knowing the shortness of life, all may value it more deeply.

Let us pray,

O God, we too often try to live in ways that ignore our coming death. We forget that our days are numbered by You, that at the end of our days your judgment awaits, that You are the Lord of our destiny.  Help us to repent daily, and then to live each day in joyful obedience. Lead us to live in the light and promise of eternity.  Prepare us to live fully and sacrificially.  Prepare us to die faithfully and hopefully, so that we might live forever with You. Through Jesus Christ, who has gone before us, we trust and hope and love and pray. Amen.
