Jesus and the Samaritan Woman at the Well

.youtube.com/watch (1951 version from The Living Christ mini-series of Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well)

In today's Gospel (John 4:5-42), we hear of a Samaritan woman who, at first, unknowingly encounters Christ at Jacob's well.  While she is drawing water from the well, Jesus tells her that the water he has to offer is living water and whoever drinks of it will not thirst again because it "will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life".  The woman asks Jesus to give her some of this living water so she will not have to go to the well to draw water again.  When Jesus reveals himself to the woman, she runs back to her village to share the news that the long-awaited Messiah, the one called Christ, has come.

As disciples of Christ, we are called to bring others to also drink of this living water - Eternal Life in Christ.  As disciples, we are called to run back to our village and share the news that the Messiah, the one called Christ, has come!  By our peaceful and prayerful witness on the sidewalk outside of Planned Parenthood, we are sharing this joyful news with a city that is starved for it!

Will you please be a bearer of the joyful news of Eternal Life in Christ this week??

STORIES FROM THE SIDEWALK

On Tuesday, 3/18, a sidewalk counselor invited a young woman who was on her way into Planned Parenthood to go over to the Women's Care Center.  The young woman acknowledged the invitation yet still went into Planned Parenthood.  Minutes later, the young woman exited from Planned Parenthood, got into her truck, stopped at the driveway of the parking lot to PP to ask the sidewalk counselor if she worked at the Women's Care Center.  The sidewalk counselor answered that no she did not work there - handed the young woman some literature and the young woman proceeded to drive across the street to the Women's Care Center parking lot where she parked and went inside.  We don't know the full story here however PRAISE GOD that the young woman went to the Women's Care Center.  Please pray for this young woman to drink of Christ's living water!

PRAYER AT AN ABORTION CHAMBER

Father, I come to this place as a new Calvary,
I wish to stand here with Mary
and those others who stood by the Cross of Jesus
the day he sacrificed himself for us sinners.

I firmly believe the sorrowful scene before my eyes
is nothing less than a reenactment of Jesus' suffering and death,
already anticipated in the massacre of the Innocents of Bethlehem
and repeated in the slaughter in the least of his brethren,
the tiny children brought here today to be slain.

Father, I realize I cannot stop the killing of most of these children,
any more than Mary could have stopped the slaying of her Child that fatal day.
But in faith I unite my heart with hers
and humbly adore your Divine purpose in allowing such bloodshed.

I offer you the blood of Jesus,
and mingled with it,
the blood of these little ones,
for their own salvation and for that of their parents,
the abortionist, and our whole generation.
Remember Jesus' own prayer from the cross,
with its echo in Mary's heart,
"Father forgive them for they know not what they do."

But perhaps the hour has not come for some of them.
Once you told Joseph to take the Child and his mother
far from those seeking the Child's life.
I offer myself to you, as St. Joseph's helper,
ready to do everything I can for my beloved Jesus and Mary
in the person of the child and mother you entrust to my care.

Dear Father, accept my prayer in the name of Jesus.  Amen.

St. Gianna, One of the patron saints to pre-born children

St. Gianna Beretta Molla is one of the patron saints to pre-born children.  St. Gianna was a wife, mother and pediatrician.  As a doctor she attested that, "The doctor should not meddle. The right of the child is equal to the right of the mother’s life. The doctor can’t decide; it is a sin to kill in the womb."
When St. Gianna was pregnant with her fourth child, she developed a fibroma on her uterus.  She was given three choices: have the fibroma removed, have a hysterectomy or have an abortion.  St. Gianna chose to have her fibroma removed.  Even though it was removed successfully, her pregnancy was very complicated.  St. Gianna told her husband and doctors, "If you must choose between me and the baby, no hesitation; choose – and I demand it – the baby. Save the baby!"  The delivery of her fourth baby - a girl named Gianna Emanuela - was also very difficult.  Gianna Emanuela was delivered via c-section.  Seven days after her birth (April 28, 1962), her mother - St. Gianna - died from a serious infection (septic peritonitis).

"St. Gianna Beretta Molla was canonized a Saint on May 16, 2004 by Pope John Paul II.  The miracle recognized by the Catholic Church to canonize Gianna Beretta Molla involved a mother, Elizabeth Comparini, who was 16 weeks pregnant in 2003 and sustained a tear in her placenta that drained her womb of all amniotic fluid. Because a normal term of pregnancy is 40 weeks, Comparini was told by her doctors the baby's chance of survival was "nil." Comparini said she prayed to Gianna Molla asking for her intercession, and was able to deliver a healthy baby despite the lack of amniotic fluid."( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gianna_Beretta_Molla )

Pope John Paul II declared Gianna "a simple, but more than ever, significant messenger of divine love." (Canonization of Six New Saints; Homily of John Paul II, Sixth Sunday of Easter, 16 May 2004).

Response: Pray for us
Holy Mary.
St. Michael the Archangel.
St. Joseph.
St. Gianna, filled with love for God.
St. Gianna, filled with love for children.
St. Gianna, filled with love for Our Lady and her Rosary.
St. Gianna, filled with love for the Most Blessed Sacrament.
St. Gianna, who sought the will of God in all things.
St. Gianna, generous with those in need.
St. Gianna, devoted to prayer.
St. Gianna, willing to lay down your life for the sake of the gospel.
St. Gianna, patient in suffering.
St. Gianna, united to Jesus on the Cross.
St. Gianna, called to the vocation of marriage.
St. Gianna, who welcomed children as a blessing.
St. Gianna, physician to the ill.
St. Gianna, faithful daughter of the church.
St. Gianna, witness to the sanctity of human life.

Won't you please bring your prayers to the sidewalk this week and call on the intercession of St. Gianna to protect all of the beautiful babies (from losing their lives to abortion) whose mothers will be visiting Planned Parenthood on Orin Road in Madison??

 A PRAYER  FOR THE UNBORN
+
Heavenly Father, in your love for us, protect us
against the wickedness of the devil, those helpless little ones
to whom you have given the gift of life.
+
Touch with pity the hearts of those women pregnant
in our world today who are not thinking of motherhood.
+
Help them to see that the child they carry
is made in your image, as well as theirs, and made for eternal life.
+
Dispel their fear and selfishness and give them true womanly hearts
to love their babies and give them birth
and all the needed care that a mother alone can give.
+
We ask this through Jesus Christ, Your Son, Our Lord,
who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit,
one God, forever and ever, Amen.

Here I Am, Lord

On Friday, 3/7/14, our sidewalk counselors were able to counsel a young woman who was 7 weeks pregnant.  This woman told our sidewalk counselors that she had already paid $125 to Planned Parenthood towards an abortion.  She said she had already given up a child for adoption and it was so painful for her.  She also said she didn't feel that she had enough resources to raise this child on her own.  Our sidewalk counselors were able to alleviate her fears and send her over to the Women's Care Center.  Please pray for this woman and the baby in her womb.

Also, on Friday, 3/7/14, four unscheduled prayer warriors stopped by Planned Parenthood to pray and sidewalk counsel.  They all felt that the Lord had called them to the sidewalk.

HERE I AM, LORD

I, the Lord of sea and sky,
I have heard my people cry.
All who dwell in dark and sin,
My hand will save.

Chorus
Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night.
I will go, Lord, if you lead me.
I will hold your people in my heart.

2.
I, who made the stars of night,
I will make their darkness bright.
Who will bear my light to them?
Whom shall I send?

Chorus

3.
I, the Lord of snow and rain,
I have borne my people’s pain.
I have wept for love of them.
They turn away.

Chorus

4.
I will break their hearts of stone,
Give them hearts for love alone.
I will speak my words to them.
Whom shall I send?

Chorus

Is the Lord calling you to the sidewalk this week?  (The temperatures will be much friendlier this week.)

AMBULANCE AT PLANNED PARENTHOOD TWO DAYS IN A ROW

On Wednesday, 3/5/14 - our prayer warriors witnessed an ambulance arrive at Planned Parenthood and take away a young woman on a gurney.  The same thing also happened on Thursday, 3/6/14.  These events remind us that abortion not only takes the lives of babies (57 million since 1973) - it is also not safe for their mothers.  Please pray for these two women.  We do not know their names or why they were taken away in an ambulance.  We do, however, know that they are in great need of our prayers.  We should pray not only for their well-being but also pray that they will find Jesus Christ through conversion and that they will seek forgiveness and find healing.

============================================================================

FROM ABBY JOHNSON THIS PAST WEEK:

"... I wanted to share a stat with you that I heard from Planned Parenthood at the last national conference I attended in 2009.

They told us that when people are outside praying at clinics the "no show rate for abortion appointments goes up to 75%." In other words, when people are outside praying, the percentage of women who have abortion appointments, but don't show up is 75%.

If that's not a reason to go and pray outside an abortion clinic, then I don't know what is."

Bring Yourself to the Sidewalk and Bring a Friend

"Yet even now, says the Lord, return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; Rend your hearts, not your garments, and return to the Lord, your God. For gracious and merciful is he, slow to anger, rich in kindness, and relenting in punishment." (Joel 2:12 - 13)
A beautiful arrangement of Hosea by a beautiful artist:

The season of Lent will be soon upon us.  Let us return to Jesus with all our hearts!  Along with our other Lenten plans let's add to our plans to come out to pray on the sidewalk outside Planned Parenthood!  In addition to our presence there - as part of our Lenten plans let's also invite a friend to join us in prayer on the sidewalk each time we go out.

BUFFER ZONE ORDINANCE UPDATE

Judge Conley denied our request for a Temporary Restraining Order so the buffer zone gag rule ordinance will be in effect very soon.  Although we know that any restriction on the freedom of speech is an erosion of it as protected by the First Amendment, we trust God to guide us through this situation and the case as it continues. When the ordinance does go into effect, Gwen will call those on the schedule for the week to discuss its impact.  In the meantime, if there are any questions - please do not hesitate to call Gwen at (608)393-8545 or e-mail her at info@vigilforlife.org.

From Our Hearts

In today's Gospel (Matthew 5:17-37), Jesus takes the old law to a new level.  He tells us that obedience to the commandments is more than just external actions.  What really matters, Jesus says, is our true intent and what comes from our hearts.

When we stand in witness on the sidewalk outside of Planned Parenthood, our external actions are driven by what comes from our hearts.  Our intent is to witness for life and our love of it.  We are there to ask from our hearts that they choose life for their baby.  Our intent is to witness for Jesus and our love for Him.  We are there to bring Jesus' mercy, hope and healing from our hearts to the mothers who have just lost their babies to abortion.

Please bring your witness for life, love and Jesus to the sidewalk this week!  (The weather forecast is looking very favorable!)

PROPOSED BUFFER ZONE GAG RULE ORDINANCE UPDATE

The buffer zone gag rule proposed by the Madison City Council has passed through two committees: the Public Safety Committee and the Board of Health for Madison and Dane County. It now moves on to the Common Council at the end of this month (February 2014) for a vote.  Vigil for Life has given testimony at both committee meetings through one representative and will do the same for the Common Council meeting - only this one representative is speaking for Vigil for Life.

Please pray for God's will to be done with the vote by the Common Council.

Salt and Light

All gospel reflections and homilies for this weekend's Gospel (Matthew 5:13-16) point to the need for us as followers of Christ Jesus to be the "salt of the earth" and the "light of the world" through our deeds and actions in order to more fully give Glory to God.

"In today's Angelus address, Pope Francis cautioned that if a Christian loses this light, “his life doesn’t make sense.  He is a Christian in name only.”   Departing from his prepared remarks, the pontiff turned to query the crowds gathered in St. Peter’s Square. “I want to ask you now, how do you want to live? As a lamp that is lit, or one that is off?”

“I can’t hear your response!” he said, urging the crowd to reply louder.

“A lit lamp!” he affirmed, “This is the Christian vocation!”

Such a calling extends to all Christians, the Pope explained. “All of us who are baptized are missionary disciples and we are called to become a living gospel in the world: with a holy life we will give ‘flavor’ to diverse settings and preserve them from decay, as salt does.” ("A Christian must give light to the world urges Pope" By: Kerri Lenartowick.)

In other words, we have not been called to be the "salt of the earth" and the "light of the world" unto ourselves but unto others.

Please bring your salt and light to the sidewalk this week.

Prayer

Dear Friends of Vigil for Life -

Prayer Warriors from time to time wonder if their prayers on the sidewalk are helpful and if what they are doing matters and makes a difference.  St. Alphonsus Liguori was (and through his many writings still is today) a great teacher of prayer.  Below is an excerpt from one of his writings that assures us all that our prayers on the sidewalk are indeed very helpful and that what we are doing is very important!

Excellence of Prayer and Its Power With God by St. Alphonsus Liguori (from The Necessity and Power of Prayer)

"Our prayers are so dear to God, that he has appointed the angels to present them to him as soon as they come forth from our mouths. 'The angels,' says St. Hilary, 'preside over the prayers of the faithful, and offer them daily to God.' This is that smoke of the incense, which are the prayers of saints, which St. John saw ascending to God from the hands of the angels (Apoc. 8,3); and which he saw in another place represented by golden phials full of sweet odors, very acceptable to God. But in order to understand better the value of prayers in God's sight, it is sufficient to read both in the Old and New Testaments the innumerable promises which God makes to the man that prays. Cry to me, and l will hear you (Ps. 49,15). Call upon me, and I will deliver you (Jer. 33,3). Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you. He shall give good things to them that ask him (Mt. 7,7). Everyone that asks receives, and he that seeks finds (Lk. 11,10). Whatsoever they shall ask, it shall be done for them by my Father (Jn 15,7). All things whatsoever you ask when you pray, believe that you shall receive them, and they shall come to you (Mt. 18,19). If you ask me anything in my name, that will I do (Jn 14,14). You shall ask whatever you will, and it shall be done to you. Amen, amen, l say to you, if you ask the Father anything in my name, he will give it to you (Jn 16,23)."

Please bring your prayers to the sidewalk this week.

OPEN HOURS
